Why did ND back off the two '17 linebackers they were recently pursuing?

ND didn't feel either fit at this point.

Simmons is only 5-11, and he didn't really fit the mold of what ND was looking for at LB.

ND already had two MIKE backers committed in this class, and both are from very good schools that produce elite talent. I don't think it would be wise to anger one of those MIKE backers who have been told ND wouldn't recruit another MIKE by suddenly taking another MIKE backer at the end.

Mike is on it. Sounded like once Elko was able to evaluate what they had vs who they were looking at, the decision was made to move on. Keep in mind that Elko's system only has 2 LBs while the Rover can be used in a number of ways. Not saying I completely agree, especially considering they only have 15 kids locked in, but he knows what he wants and needs. And if you factor in the LBs they have on the team now they will have a surplus. Better to focus on the DLine and Secondary - need a lot of help there from a depth and talent standpoint...
