The season is over for Notre Dame on the field, but recruiting is now in season and the Irish staff is working hard on upperclassmen and underclassmen. 2019 Augustus Hawkins (Calif.) athlete DeGabriel Floyd got his offer from Notre Dame on Tuesday and couldn’t have been more excited, as area recruiter Mike Denbrock saw practice.

“Coach Denbrock had come to our practice and I was just doing individuals with the defense,” Floyd told Irish Sports Daily. “I saw Coach Denbrock come to the field, but we didn’t get to talk. He was having a conversation with my teammate Greg (Johnson). Later that night, I got the offer and I was excited.”

The 6-foot-3, 218-pounder is familiar with Notre Dame, as he was part of a group that made the trip to South Bend from California last spring.

“Notre Dame is a prestigious program,” stated Floyd. “It’s exciting to know I could go to that school. Just having the ability and the opportunity to be able to go there is mind blowing. I didn’t think this type of stuff would happen.

“I didn’t think I’d be this type of player and have these types of opportunities. I never thought I’d have the chance to go to school and play ball. It’s just exciting.”

It is an exciting period for the sophomore, as Notre Dame was his 12th offer and joined the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, USC, Utah and Washington State.

Floyd admitted the process is a little overwhelming with 13 early offers, but he reminds himself that there is plenty of time to make decision.

“It’s wild,” said Floyd. “I am handling it well, but sometimes I think about it too much and it weighs on me. I start thinking about making decisions, but I know I am still young and I am going to have options, so I want to make to make the best decision.

“I have to keep being patient with the process.”

At Augustus Hawkins, Floyd has a pretty good support system, as many of his teammates have Division-I offers. While he hasn’t asked them for too much advice yet, Floyd knows they will be there to help him out when he needs it.

“We have talked about it a little bit, but it’s not like we’re always talking about it,” he explained. “They have told me to take my time and make sure I am comfortable wherever I want to go. They have told me that liking where you’re going is a big part of it.”

Notre Dame did impress Floyd on his visit, especially the the campus.

“That campus is crazy,” an excited Floyd stated. “It’s like a medieval times look. The buildings are like castles. It’s just crazy. I loved it. Notre Dame is pretty different than the schools on the West Coast.”

When the time comes to make a decision, Floyd’s mother will have a big impact on that. Floyd wants his mother to experience the same feelings and thoughts as he does.

“I was hoping my mom could come on my visits, so we can see the facilities, academics and the living grounds,” explained Floyd. “I want her to get a feel for the school to see if it’s a good enough environment for me to go.

“I want her to be comfortable with the people I will be surrounded by. I am going to have to like the school and I want to get a feel for it too. I have different things that appeal to me about different schools and coaches.”

There is one school that Floyd wants to see this offseason and it’s a school making a huge move with California prospects.

“I kind of want to check out Nebraska,” said Floyd. “My teammate, Joseph (Lewis), has been out there a lot. I want to get a feel for it and see what it’s like. My teammates that have gone out there have talked about the fan base and how crazy it is. I want to see what the talk is about and what it feels like.”
