The Echoes ‘16 was a night to celebrate the 2016 Notre Dame football season and honor the 2016 Notre Dame seniors. However, it was also a night to move into the future, as the Notre Dame named seven captains for the 2017 season.

Quarterback DeShone Kizer, linebacker Greer Martini, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, linebacker Nyles Morgan, offensive guard Quenton Nelson, safety Drue Tranquill and wide receiver Austin Webster will be your 2017 captains.

The move will establish clear leadership in the offseason and allow each captain to find their roles during spring ball.

It’s also worth noting that DeShone Kizer has not made his decision on his NFL future, but incase the junior quarterback does return in 2017, he will be expected to lead.

Martini played in 12 games in 2016, which included four starts. The linebacker recorded 55 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks this fall.

Morgan started all 12 games as the Mike linebacker and ended the year with 94 tackles with 10 tackles in five different games.

Nelson was a 12-game starter at left guard and was named an All-American by several scouting services for his performance in 2016.

Tranquill totaled 79 tackles in his 12 starts and was named a 2016 Academic All-American, as he had a 3.74 grade-point average.

Webster is a walk-on and one of the top receivers on the Irish scout team.

Naming seven captains is the largest season-long collection of captains in the history of Notre Dame football.
