It’s been an up and down career for Devin Butler at Notre Dame, but the Washington D.C. native will get a fresh start for his fifth and final year at Syracuse.

The cornerback will utilize the graduate transfer rule and head to play for head coach Dino Babers. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder battled off the field problems and injuries his last two seasons in South Bend, but will get a fresh start at a new program.

Butler was arrested in August of 2016 after an altercation outside a local South Bend bar and then was indefinitely suspended by Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly. In October, Butler plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement and will complete a pretrial diversion program.

It wasn’t always negative for Butler at Notre Dame, as he saw playing time at cornerback his freshman season. For his career, Butler will finish with 37 games played, 39 tackles, seven pass deflections and one interception.

Butler had a message for Notre Dame fans before he heads to Syracuse, who knew of his plans in November.

“The way the Notre Dame community welcomed me as an 18-year old kid from D.C. showed me what genuine appreciation, hospitality and class really meant. The coaches, professors, the fans and my classmates, every interaction I’ve had has made me a better person. I will always consider Notre Dame a home too. The people here will always be my family.”
