Notre Dame has landed its fourth commitment in the 2019 class as Sachse (Texas) defensive tackle Hunter Spears‍ has given his pledge to the Irish.

The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder chose Notre Dame over offers from Alabama, Baylor, Cal, Houston, Illinois, Michigan State, TCU, Texas Tech, Virginia and a few other programs.

Notre Dame defensive line coach Mike Elston spear-headed the recruitment and played a significant part in the early commitment.

“He’s definitely a family man, which is definitely important for me,” stated Spears. “I know I’d have a family up there that would care for me and take care of me when I was away from home. I got to hear how he is as a football coach and his philosophy.”

Head coach Brian Kelly also impressed Spears on his unofficial visit for the USC game back in October.

“He’s a real good guy,” the four-star prospect said. “I like what he’s doing with everything. They’ve definitely had a major turnaround this year. He’s trying to do everything right with the right kind of kids and play hard smashmouth football.”

Spears had always had the Irish in high regard, but it was the full package that sold him on Notre Dame.

“Education along with the football aspect,” said Spears. “Education is definitely an important factor for me. Being able to play that top-notch football and being able to get that education at the same time is definitely intriguing for me.

“Education has always been so important to me because of what it can help me do after football field and help me achieve my dreams.”

On his visit to Notre Dame for Junior Day, Spears also experience what truly makes the Irish a diverse program.

“Notre Dame has such a big pull from all over, so I got to meet a lot of people, people from Tennessee, California and Georgia," Spears said. "Just all over and a bunch of kids I would never get to meet other places because they have such a wide pool. I would definitely say that the d-line group, we formed a pretty good relationship.”

The Texas native joins 2019 four-star defensive tackle Jacob Lacey‍ as part of the 2019 defensive line haul.
