BREAKING: Notre Dame Lands ASU WR Grad Transfer Cam Smith

Notre Dame will add a player to the 2017 roster as grad transfer Cam Smith enters the Irish program from Arizona State.

The 6-foot, 203-pounder recorded 61 catches for 917 yards and six scores over his career for the Sun Devils. In 2014, Smith had 41 receptions for 596  yard and six touchdowns before suffering a knee injury.

Smith missed the 2015 season recovering from knee surgery, and Arizona State clearly missed his explosive playmaking ability.

“He had more explosive plays than anybody on our offense,” head coach Todd Graham stated in an article by AZCentral.com. “That’s the big thing. His ability to have one-play touchdowns. He had more explosive plays than (NFL third-round draft pick) Jaelen (Strong). That’s something we missed tremendously.”

Smith comes from Coppell High School (Texas), which should be a familiar high school program for Notre Dame fans as former running back Cam McDaniel is also an alum.

It’s also worth noting Notre Dame receiver coach Del Alexander and offensive coordinator Chip Long had a history with Smith when all three were at Arizona State. The competition at receiver should be exactly what the Irish need as Smith joins fellow grad transfer Freddy Canteen and freshmen Michael Young and Jafar Armstrong as new faces on the 2017 roster.

Staff-

Can you do a comparison with Freddy Canteen? Which is more likely- if either- to make a significant contribution?

Thx much

Would he play slot? Could he get a medical for 2015 and olay two years? If Stepherson returns, coyld Canteen go to D?

Why is ND stockpiling injured WRs?

Nothing like frustrating the healthy and young (2,3,4 year commitments) WR already on the roster by
taking away their reps.

These xfers aren't free agents that you cut if they don't work out.

My bet is they must be special teams guys who will learn how to tackle and create TO's.

Unfortunately, if the young and healthy WR's played better, we wouldn't need to bring in injured WR's to compete with them.

I can understand consternation over Canteen. But Cam Smith seems legit.

Any player you can add in June is good. The WR play last fall and this spring left much to be desired. There needs to be competition. The two grad transfers will add experience and competition, two things Notre Dame needs desperately at WR.

And to add to what Matt said, yes competition is good for the young kids plus having experience is a plus. We don't have much of that at all. And if you look at the WR corp we have size but no real burners. This kid runs a 4.4 and if Stepherson is ineligible then he could fill a big void. Just hoping KS doesn't find himself ineligible and then transfers... at this point, w no transfers available for DL or DB I would say adding a weapon in Offense is a plus. Solid get since we have the scholly to give
