Senior forward helps Lithuanian Student National Team win the gold medal at the World University Games.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Senior forward Martinas Geben finished his run with the Lithuanian Student National Team at the World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan, in golden fashion, helping his team claim the gold medal with a 85-74 victory over the United States representative team, Purdue University, on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

The gold medal caps a grueling month of basketball for the Vilnius, Lithuania, native. After participating in a team camp at Druskininkai, Lithuania, from July 18 through July 25, Geben was a member of the 15-player travel party to China that participated in a series of exhibition games in preparation for the World University Games.

Competing against Angola, New Zealand, China, Serbia and Montenegro during the 15-day tour, Geben earned a spot on the team during the nine-game stint. After arriving in Taipei for the tournament practice sessions, Geben promptly made headlines by shattering a backboard during a team workout.

The tournament started for the Lithuanian team with a victory over Israel, then a close loss to Australia. Geben's team quickly recovered to rattle off six consecutive victories to earn the gold medal. Among his memorable performances in the run, Geben had 20 points and 11 rebounds against Russia and 12 points with seven rebounds in the gold medal game against Purdue.

Geben is expected back to campus over the weekend and will jump right into his class work and preseason workout routine with his teammates. With 24 career starts under his belt, Geben can now bring a measure of gold-medal confidence into his final year on the Irish roster.
