Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly spoke to Jack Nolan following Wednesday's practice.

On Wednesday's practice
“Today was a moving day for some guys. We wanted to see some improvement in certain things and we spent some time with individuals with what we expect from them. We had some matchups in certain areas we wanted to see. I thought I got an opportunity to see some of those things.

“We have to continue to compete. A lot of things were scripted today for us to see some red zone, short-yardage and we wanted to get an opportunity to see some guys in particular positions. Shaun Crawford got a lot of safety work today and he’ll get back to corner tomorrow. Asmar Bilal playing some Buck linebacker. We moved some guys around to give an added flexibility.

“The guys did a really good job today. We’re just building on giving us the flexibility to play guys. We have some good depth and some good areas to build on at cornerback, safety and linebacker.

On quarterback Phil Jurkovec:
“We worked a lot with Phil Jurkovec. I thought he made great improvement today. His mechanics and footwork were really good. He had his best day today. He continues to make improvements.”

On wide receiver depth:
“Braden Lenzy continues to impress. His ability to get down the field – he has that downfield speed you’re looking for. He’s going to catch the football down the field and he’s going to score touchdowns for us. It’s great to have that guy who can get over the top and do some things.

“Javon McKinley continues to do good things for us. Lawrence Keys, Mike Young – we have some really good depth and flexibility where we can move some guys around.

“(Chase) Claypool had back-to-back really good days. He started a little slow because we backed him off a little bit. He’s starting to round into shape. We’re only four days into it, but a lot of guys are working hard. They are all putting in the time.”

On full pads on Thursday:
“It won’t be a big part of the day. It will still be business as usual. We’ve kind of overplay that a little bit. We’ve been pretty physical in terms of what we’ve been doing. We’re going to take the back down and that changes a little bit.

“I think the evaluation is really focused on our defense in terms of tackling. That will be a big tomorrow. We’re seeing some really good things with our linebacker fits and support. Let’s see how we tackle. The big question is tomorrow. We’ll have a lot of media here tomorrow and they’ll be evaluating who can tackle. We’ve seen a lot of really good things and tomorrow I’ll be excited about who is tackling the football.”
