Kevin Bauman‍ was in South Bend again this past weekend and again, the 2020 New Jersey tight end was reminded why he made the decision he did more than a year ago to commit to Notre Dame.

“It was awesome,” the Red Bank Catholic High School star said. “It was a great weekend from the time we got there to the time we left. It was incredible.

“Just the whole experience of an official visit, especially at Notre Dame, the experience of a big game like USC was awesome and just being with my future teammates.”

The highlight of the trip was the opportunity to spend time with several other Irish commits who were also in town for the 30-27 win over the Trojans.

“We were kind of hanging out with all of the guys,” said Bauman.” I spent a lot of time with Drew (Pyne), Mike (Mayer), Xavier (Watts), Jordan Johnson, (Chris) Tyree. Tosh (Baker) was there, Mike Carmody and all the dudes in the ’21 class too.”

He was also able to hang out with many of the current players on the roster.

“We got to spend time with players here and there when we went out to dinner and also after the game a little bit, we were hanging out with them,” he said. “It was really fun to be around the guys we’ll be spending a lot of time with.”

Watching current Irish tight end Cole Kmet lead Notre Dame in receptions and receiving yards while catching touchdown against USC was another highlight.

“Coach (Chip) Long loves getting the ball to tight ends and I love that,” Bauman said. “Cole really just dominated both in the pass game and the run game. He’s a dominant force and it’s really impressive to watch.”

The message from the Notre Dame coaching staff to Bauman was clear.

“Just keep working; keep working in the classroom and on the field,” he said. “It’s obviously important to them. Just keep getting faster and more explosive and the rest will take care of itself. They can’t wait to get us up there and I’m looking forward to it.”

Bauman is more excited about his future now than ever.

“Every time we’ve gone out there, it’s more comfortable and feels more like home. Every time I go back out there, it just shows how comfortable I am with that decision and how perfect of a decision that was.”
