On Thursday morning, ACC Commissioner John Swofford said that things had changed in the lead-up and in the midst of the men’s basketball tournament and that while the plan was to continue on with the event in Greensboro, N.C., things could change again.

They have.

Following a flurry of cancellations from other conferences around the nation, the ACC announced a halt to its tourney.

Within about a half-hour’s time just before noon, the Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC, Atlantic-10 and AAC all cancelled their respective tournaments because of concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19.

Florida State and Clemson had already taken the court for warmups in advance of their 12:30 tip before they left the court to learn the news.

While addressing a sparsely-filled arena, Swofford said the decision was made during a call with university presidents about 15 minutes earlier.

He reiterated the fact that the situation was “extraordinarily fluid.”

Florida State has been awarded the league’s automatic bid if there is to be an NCAA Tournament this year.
