Gulliver Prep athletic director Ira Childress hosted a Zoom call on Wednesday with 200 high school athletic directors from across the country and welcomed Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly as guest speaker.

Kelly answered questions about how his program is handling the unexpected changes brought on by the outbreak of COVID-19, how his staff is going about evaluating high school prospects, his advice to high school student-athletes and coaches during this period and more.

When asked what Notre Dame looks for in a prospect, the head coach talked about the search for those who want to be high achievers on the field and in the classroom.

“They stand out pretty easily,” he told the virtual audience. “As athletic directors, you know those guys when they’re walking in the hallways.”

Kelly also said he’d advise high school athletes to use this time away from school to concentrate on things they could do for themselves academically and not to avoid taking the easy path.

He acknowledged that students will be unable to take the SAT or ACT, but to understand there be allowances made for those across the board, so to do what they can to “strengthen their academic profile.

“As it relates to your own core, as it relates to obviously working to get a higher GPA, these are great opportunities to do that.”
