Notre Dame QB Ian Book Adapting to Covid-19

The coronavirus has made everyone adapt and that includes the quarterback at Notre Dame.

Ian Book spent his spring break in Las Vegas before training in Omaha with Sage Rosenfels.

The 6-foot, 212-pounder spoke with Jac Collinsworth on his Distanced Training segment as he continues to train at home in Northern California.

"It's definitely different," Book told Collinsworth. "I'm still getting used to it and trying to find a routine. Basically, I workout every day and do some type of running every day.

"I throw Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We have a good group of guys and we try to maintain social distancing, but we have a good group of guys in the Sacramento area."

The adjustment to daily life has been a change, but the Book family is on the frontlines.

"Mom is a nurse," Book stated. "Dad is retired law enforcement and my brother is currently in law enforcement. I'm in the house trying to maintain being safe as well. They're doing a great job and I can't thank them enough. They're out there every day."

Book admits they don't discuss it too much, but his mother is making sure to let the family know the importance of taking the pandemic seriously.

"My mom is in the hospital and seeing everything going on. She's doing a good job of not stressing the entire family out, but at the same time, letting us know how crazy it is and making sure we're staying safe. She's washing her hands like crazy. She's not going to bring anything home. She has us in mind."

"She's doing well, but you can tell she's stressing out a little bit. My dad is doing a good job and the same with my brother. My brother works downtown in one of the jails. They have to check inmates and be careful of who is going in there as well."

The fifth-year signal-caller is entering his final year at Notre Dame and knows the 2020 season could be extremely different.

"I thought about it yesterday," said Book. "Someone was like, 'What do you miss most?'

"Running out of the tunnel and then I thought about running out of the tunnel with no fans.

"If that's the way we have to play football this season, then I'm not complaining. I can't wait to have my last year of college football, but it'd be different not to have 85,000 screaming fans. It wouldn't be the same. It'd feel more like a practice or scrimmage."

Notre Dame has adjusted as they have meetings over Zoom and the SWAT leaders are holding their teammates accountable during workouts at home.

New offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is also making sure to keep his quarterbacks sharp by giving them quizzes every week.

"We have two a week," said Book. "We have our Ipads and it's basically an ABC question for about 10 questions. We have to turn it in by the next meeting.

"You're allowed to meet three times a week. We'll meet, install and have a quiz on all of that. It's good to test your mind and just like you'd be doing it if you were on campus."
