The Top CBs Notre Dame Will Face in 2020

With Chase Claypool off to the NFL, Notre Dame doesn’t have a definitive number one at receiver heading into the summer. The presumptive replacement for Claypool is Kevin Austin and while everyone agrees he has the talent to be a star, he still has to get on the field and prove it.

He and the rest of the receiver corps for Notre Dame will be tested by some very good cornerbacks in 2020. While there may not be an All-American on this list, every single one of them looks poised to have a career in the NFL.

Paulson Adebo (Stanford)

Everyone knows Adebo’s story and most thought he wouldn’t be back this season to face the Irish. The truth is he was much better in 2018 (19 pass breakups) than he was in 2019, even before he was lost for the season in week 11.

He’s a big body who matches up well against taller receivers, but Miles Boykin got the better of their matchup in 2018. He has had games where he has been dominant, though, and was projected to be a first round draft pick prior to the ‘19 season.

Tre Swilling (Georgia Tech)

The son of former All-Pro linebacker Pat Swilling, Tre has shown he’s a ball hawk in his two seasons in Atlanta. He finished with 10 pass breakups last season and already has 22.5 Havoc plays in his career.

If he continues on the trajectory he’s on, it’s fair to expect him to make a momentum-swinging play at some point when the Irish play the Yellow Jackets.

Derion Kendrick (Clemson)

Kendrick came to Clemson as a receiver and flashed big play potential as a freshman. The next spring he moved to cornerback because the Tigers had a clear need at the position. He earned the job starting opposite AJ Terrell and finished as a second team All-ACC corner.

He’s not the best cornerback out of this group today, but he may be by the time Clemson visits Notre Dame.
