Recruiting never stops.

So while Notre Dame is in the midst of a season it hopes includes a berth in the College Football Playoff, the Irish are also concentrated on recruiting; wrapping up the 2021 class while making inroads in the Class of 2022.

But they’re also keeping an eye on getting an early start on prospects in the Class of 2023, which is why Notre Dame extended a scholarship offer to Florida running back Sedrick Irvin Jr.‍ earlier this month.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder said one of the Irish’s coaches informed his father, the former Michigan State running back by the same name, and he told Irvin Jr.

“I was super excited,” said Irvin Jr. “Notre Dame is a really prestigious university, so it’s an honor.

“I don’t know too much, but I know they’re a great team right now and they always produce great talent. You always see them in The League.”

The Gulliver Prep standout also has early offers from schools like Michigan State, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Georgia, Penn State, Oregon, Tennessee and Duke among others.

He’s been in touch with Notre Dame running backs coach Lance Taylor and tight ends coach John McNulty.

“Coach Taylor was just asking questions about my game and stuff like that and when we can visit,” said Irvin Jr. “Coach McNulty was telling me more about the offensive scheme and how they have more of an NFL type of o-line with their blocking scheme. I thought that was pretty cool.

“They seem like great guys and they seemed like they really believed in what they were talking about. That’s something that’s good to hear from coaches.”

Irvin Jr., said he “definitely” wants to keep in touch with the Irish assistants and hopes to visit South Bend sometime next year when the dead period is lifted.

“See the campus, see the players, see how everyone treats each other, how the coaches treat the players,” he said.

His father had a pair of impressive outings against the Irish during his time as a Spartan back in the late-1990s.

“He hasn’t told me much about Notre Dame, but he talks a lot about his playing days, so I kind of know,” Irvin Jr., said.

Irvin Sr., serves as Gulliver Prep’s running backs coach and his son appreciates having a father with such experience with the game and the recruiting process.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Irvin Jr. “There are a lot of things he can tell me that I can learn from, especially since he went the places I’m trying to get to. It’s a lot easier having your dad having done it.”

One thing Irvin Sr., hasn’t said is to follow his footsteps to East Lansing and essentially ignore the other programs.

“A lot of people think it gives them the edge, but at the end of the day, it’s my decision,” said Irvin Jr. “He always tells me, ‘It’s your decision. Don’t let anything I’ve done or anything I say influence where you want to go. You go where you want to go.’ I think that’s really important for me to always keep my options open.”

Irvin said no schools are standing out at the moment, but does know what he’s looking for in a college.

“I feel like everyone is even,” he said. “The environment when I go up there, the vibe that I feel, if I like it or I don’t, how I’m treated, how I feel like I’ll be treated, how the players treat each other. Especially the campus, I feel like that’s a big thing that’s goes into it too.

“When it comes to football, a team that likes running the ball, a place that I know I’ll play, a place that produces great running backs, good offensive linemen, great teams and to learn from someone who knows what they’re doing.”
