Guyer High School in Denton, Texas didn’t get bit by the COVID-19 bug the way many high school programs in the Lone Star State did during the fall, but the Wildcats were hit by injuries.

“Every game, it seemed like we lost a starter either on the offensive side or defensive side,” Guyer assistant coach Mike Gallegos said.

“The Prosper game, we ended up losing three offensive starters and one defensive starter in that one game. And the one defensive starter that we lost in that game was Jordan Eubanks, who is at Florida State right now.”

When Eubanks went down, sophomore safety Peyton Bowen‍ was the next man up.

“Peyton had got some limited reps here and there and then he became a full-out starter in a matter of one play early in that game,” Gallegos said. “Peyton stepped right in and goes from playing freshman ball last year to playing varsity ball at the 6A level in Texas, which is a pretty big jump.

“He held his own and did really well and got better.”

Bowen held his own and then some, performing well enough to earn scholarship offers from schools like Baylor, Colorado, Michigan State, USC and as of St. Patrick’s Day, Notre Dame.

“He's got some length,” Gallegos said. “He's probably grown a couple of inches since the season ended. He's probably about 6-foot right now, about 180.”

The Irish offered both Bowen and his classmate and fellow Guyer secondarymate, Ryan Yaites‍ during their huge Pot of Gold push.

“Both of them have huge smiles on their faces and great demeanors about themselves and they're great in the classroom,” Gallegos said of Bowen and Yaites. “Both of them check all the boxes.

“I think both of them are fired up about that Notre Dame offer and it's definitely going to be high on the list. They're both just going to get so much better over the next couple of years.”
