A couple schools have stuck out for a while in Jaylen Sneed’s recruitment and that’s where the 2022 South Carolina linebacker is as he gets set to announce his commitment on Monday.

“He's narrowed it down to two, Oregon and Notre Dame,” Hilton Head High School head coach BJ Payne told Irish Sports Daily.

Sneed took an official visit to Oregon on June 4th and an official to Notre Dame on June 14th.

“He loved both of visits, was blown away by both locations and had some unbelievable things to say about both programs,” said Payne.

Prior to the officials, Payne joined Sneed on an independent unofficial visit to South Bend back in March. The dead period was still in place at the time, but the linebacker and his coach were able to get a feel for the campus.

“It was good,” Payne said. “It was different, it was an unofficial for him.

“We walked around and saw everything, but it was because a good visit; the smallness of campus, we were able to walk around campus from one end to the other. Just the architecture, the beauty of the campus really stood out.”

His affection for the Ducks dates back to childhood.

“With Oregon, he grew up an Oregon fan as a kid,” said Payne. “He's in that generation of Oregon really changing and developing into a national power during his upbringing, so he grew up an Oregon fan.”

New Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman has helped put Notre Dame in a strong position – perhaps the strongest – over the last several months.

“The academic piece was really important for him and then Notre Dame jumped in the mix,” said Payne. “Obviously, he's had a relationship with Freeman for about four years now, three years. He was his first offer at Cincinnati.

“I think that's always been a huge factor into it.”
