Irish Check In On 2018 Texas F Cunningham

During Notre Dame’s break last week, Irish assistant coach Ryan Humphrey made his way down to Texas to check out some prospects, including 2018 forward Brock Cunningham.

“I think I shook his hand, but I didn’t talk to him because you’re not allowed to have a long conversation right now because of NCAA rules,” Cunningham said of Humphrey. “But he did text me and asked me about Notre Dame and if I would be interested.”

The 6-foot-7, 205-pounder from Austin’s Westlake High School didn’t have to think long to answer.

“I said, ‘Yes,’” Cunningham said matter of factly. “They’ve got a really good tradition from what I’ve seen, they’re always competing.

“My family on my mom’s side grew up around Notre Dame. She definitely likes it and her dad loves it.”

Cunningham’s mother spent a ton of time in the area while his grandfather was associated with the University.

“She grew up pretty close to campus and really enjoys it,” he said.

Cunningham is right around 10 offers at this point with schools like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri and others having pulled the trigger.

“It’s nice,” the junior said. “It’s good to know that other people think I would be able to contribute to their school and it means a lot. It’s an honor to get a scholarship from any school no matter what. It means a lot that other people think that of my basketball talent.”

College coaches have told him they like his attitude on the court.

“I would say it’s consistently how hard I play and how much I don’t want to lose, that’s kind of been the baseline for all of these coaches,” he said.

“I would describe myself as a player who goes for every rebound and can stretch the court with the three-ball.”

He isn’t sure what’s next between himself and Notre Dame at this point, although he’s honored to even be on the Irish’s radar.

“It’s really up to Coach Humphrey right now, if he thinks I’m good enough,” said Cunningham.

“I’m just very lucky that he thought I was good enough. It’s not too often a D-I team thinks a player has the talent to even speak to them. I’m just happy that he even texted me. It means a lot.”

If the Irish did offer, he’d likely try to get to South Bend for a visit.

“I’d definitely take a look at it,” said Cunningham.

“If I could go there and compete and help the team win some games. The campus and the academics are very important to me. I know Notre Dame is very prestigious, so that’s already taken care of, so just being able to go compete at a strong basketball school would be nice.”

Cunningham isn’t quite ready to start narrowing his list just yet.

“It’s still pretty early in the recruiting process in my mind. I’m still open to anything right now. Wherever it can take me, I’d be very happy.”
