Harvey Already Seeing Role at Notre Dame

When 2018 DeMatha (Md.) star DJ Harvey signed with Notre Dame, a sense of excitement entered the Notre Dame basketball program. The 6-foot-7 forward has a skillset the Irish typically haven’t had on the roster and Harvey was paying very close attention to his future team over the last few weeks.

“They played great in the ACC Tournament,” Harvey told Irish Sports Daily. “They played really well especially against Florida State and it was great game all around. They struggled a little bit against Duke, but the defense was there.”

Notre Dame fell short of the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to West Virginia last week. Harvey saw the Irish looks on edge and felt he saw a role where he could make an impact early in his career.

“It looked like they were playing a little nervous in the NCAA Tournament, especially against West Virginia,” Harvey explained. “West Virginia is a great team and Notre Dame was a great team, so it was just unfortunate they lost.

“I felt like they needed an extra ball-handler. You could tell there were a lot of jitters out there. I believe I could have helped. I would have been able to help Matt (Farrell) out and bring the ball up the floor.”

Harvey has the talent to help take pressure off Farrell, but he can also provide support to take some of the load of Bonzie Colson’s shoulders on the offensive end of the floor. As a junior, Harvey averaged 15.4 points and seven rebounds per game.

“I saw myself making plays and helping the team out,” he said. “I could also help out on the glass and be aggressive there.”

Speaking of Colson, Harvey is excited for a chance to learn and compete with a First-Team All-ACC Selection in a few months.

“Bonzie is one of the best players in the country,” stated Harvey. “It will help me out big-time going against him in practice. The coaches have already mentioned that to me, so I am looking forward to going against him in practice.”

Harvey’s senior season is now complete and he isn’t wasting anytime getting ready for his arrival to Notre Dame this summer. Head coach Mike Brey has continued to Harvey know how important he is to the program, but the two have also started to develop a strong rapport over the last few months.

“I’ve been back to workouts for a few days,” said Harvey. “I took about a week off after the season ended. I have started working on one-on-one stuff and some reading and reacting things.

“Coach Brey and I talked the other day. I asked him how he was doing, as well as the guys and his family. It’s just a good relationship right now. I am looking forward to getting to South Bend in June.”
