Justin Birdsong admits he didn’t expect his recruiting to kick off as quickly as it has, but once it gets started, it gets going.

The 2018 Georgia cornerback has offers from schools like Ball State, Central Michigan, Army, Navy and Air Force among others.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect to get any offers until this spring, when we started spring practice,” Birdsong said. “Once I got my first offer then all of the other schools started to notice me and they started to offer. I don’t really pay too much attention to it until I’m ready to make my decision.”

Now the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder from Stone Mountain, Ga., is hoping that momentum will continue. After having contact with Notre Dame defensive backs coach Todd Lyght, Birdsong is set to visit South Bend for this weekend’s Blue-Gold Game.

“Coach Lyght followed me and we talked,” Birdsong explained. He said that he wanted to see me in person before he were to offer me.

“When I visit, I’ll be looking to see that all of the players are really together.”

Birdsong, who was clocked at sub-4.5 in the 40-yard dash at a Georgia State camp last year, has had his eyes on Notre Dame for a while now.

“I used to watch Notre Dame – I still watch them – but I watched them a lot coming up as a kid,” he said. “When I talked with Coach Lyght, he sounded like a really cool coach. I know that he has an NFL background.

“When he talked to me, he said he felt really good about what I could do at Notre Dame. My mom felt really comfortable with him.”

Birdsong said Ball State and Central Michigan are in his top three along with the Irish right now in no order, although Notre Dame would probably move to the top of the list with an offer.

He hasn’t made many visits recently, but will head to Ball State the day after Notre Dame.

He knows what he’s looking for.

“What school makes me fell the most at home, wherever I feel I’m going to thrive the most,” he said. “If I feel like I can get a decent amount of playing time my freshman year. It’s not really based on distance or anything of that nature, just where I feel comfortable and where I feel I could play.”

He believes he brings versatility to the secondary, but in all likelihood, will be a corner at the next level.

“Last season I had to play safety because our starting free safety got hurt, but I was playing corner before that,” he said. “All of the coaches look at my film and think I’m a true corner, but that I have the versatility to play free safety, corner and nickel.”
