Brandon Smith has five early offers from top East Coast schools and the 2019 Virginia defensive end/linebacker’s recruitment promises to go national soon.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder from Mineral, Va., already has offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Maryland and Duke.

“It feels good to know that all of your hard work in the classroom and out on the field is really paying off and that the schools notice that,” Smith said. “It makes you feel good about yourself.”

He’s also receiving interest from schools like Clemson along with some preliminary interest from Notre Dame. Smith is hoping that interest from the Irish continues to build in the months to come.

“I know they’re one of the top 15 academic schools in the country,” he said. “I also know they have a really good football program.”

The Louisa County High School standout said he’d definitely be interested in visiting South Bend at some point.

“I’d just like to see the campus and talk with some of the academic people and just get to know more about the school and get to see the different facilities they have,” he said.

College coaches aren’t sure whether Smith will end up at linebacker or defensive end. It’ll be based on how he grows and isn’t a concern of Smith’s.

“They like how I can play from the sideline to sideline and hit,” Smith said of college scouts. “They also see how I’m a leader on the field and telling my teammates where the ball is going to be going before they even see it.”

He’s already made visits to Virginia, Virginia Tech, Duke, Maryland, Penn State, Clemson.

“They were pretty good,” said Smith. “I got to see the practice and how they do things during that and the different styles of practices and the differences between all of the campuses and the way they have everything set up as far as academics and their football facilities and school.”

Smith has his priorities in order when it comes to the recruiting process.

“I’ll look at academics first and then football and then the environment of where I’m going to be at,” he said.

“If I get hurt, I’m going to have to be somewhere I know I’ll get a degree that will really pop at people when I go for a job.”
