It wasn’t going to be difficult for Notre Dame recruiting coordinator Mike Elston to convince Spencer Bono to make a trip out to South Bend to camp with the Irish this summer.

“Coach Elston told my coach to have me call him,” the 2019 Ohio defensive end explained. “I called him and he told me he wanted to see me at camp. I was really excited because I love Notre Dame, so I’ll be up there on Saturday.”

The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder has been an Irish fan for a long time.

“Honestly, I just loved them since I was probably like seven,” said Bono. “Mainly, it was football reasons, but as I’ve grown more mature and realized academics actually matter more than football and Notre Dame is one of the only schools that has an elite football program and elite academic program.

“That’s one of the reasons they’re one of my favorites.”

The Cincinnati native already has offers from Boston College, Iowa, Cincinnati and Toledo.

“I’m honored,” he said. “I just love football and to be able to play college is just awesome to me. It means a lot having four offers already.”

He’s also grateful for the opportunity to perform in front of the Irish staff.

“My speed, my ability, my get-off, my all-out hustle,” Bono said when asked what he hopes to show the Notre Dame coaches.

Bono said an offer from the Irish at some point “would mean so much to me.”

“They were pretty much my dream school growing up and being able to play there would be a great experience,” he said.

In addition to Notre Dame, the Elder High School standout is also receiving interest from schools like Ohio State, Michigan State and Louisville.

He’ll stop at Iowa on prior to camping at Notre Dame.

“I’m going there on Thursday for a visit and to see what they’re all about,” he said.

Bono has a clear view of what he’s looking for in a college.

“If they have a major of my interest that I would take or if they are an academically-superior school such as Notre Dame and Boston College. The distance from my house is really a key factor.”
