Mabry Makes It Back To Notre Dame

Cole Mabry got a peek at his future on Saturday, when the 2018 Irish offensive line commit returned to Notre Dame for an unofficial visit.

“I had a great time,” the 6-foot-6, 270-pounder from Brentwood, Tenn., said.

Mabry made the trip to participate in Notre Dame’s Lineman’s Challenge Camp with Irish offensive line coach Harry Hiestand.

“I got to work with Coach Hiestand personally and he coached me up,” Mabry explained. “Zack Martin and some of the other football players there coached me up. I learned a lot.”

Working with the former Irish standout and current Dallas Cowboy All-Pro was especially exciting for Mabry.

“It was awesome,” he said. “He was over there coaching me up. I’m a big Cowboys fan too, so that was really cool having him coach me.”

As he said, Mabry learned plenty during the session.

“I learned how to place my hands,” he explained. “They do open-hand, knuckles-up technique. That was new to me and then running on contact, just a lot of stuff about keeping my head back and not lunging out.”

It was Mabry’s first chance to get on the field and be put through drills by Hiestand.

“It’s great to work with Coach Hiestand,” he said. “I think he’s going to be a great coach to work under.”

While in town, Mabry also had a chance to hang out with fellow 2018 Irish offensive line commit John Dirksen.

“It was great,” said Mabry. “We were just talking like we’ve known each other for a while. It’s great to build that bond up before we start playing with each other.”

Mabry is looking at returning to South Bend a couple times this fall.

“I think we’re planning on coming up for the Georgia and USC games.”
