2019 Charlotte Christian (N.C.) defensive back Jeremiah Gray had heard about Notre Dame from various people, but he got his first look last Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 198-pounder had his expectations exceeded, and it also included quality time with the Notre Dame staff.

“I was impressed,” Gray told Irish Sports Daily. “I didn’t know the campus was as nice as it was. I am from North Carolina, so I hadn’t been to Indiana much. I was just surprised at how beautiful the campus was at Notre Dame.

“I really liked the time I spent with coach Elko, coach Lea, and coach Lyght. It was fun.”

Gray got the chance to get worked out by Elko in almost a 1-on-1 environment, and it meant all eyes were on him.

“We did a lot of backpedaling and DB drills with another recruit,” explained Gray. I worked out with him for 20-30 minutes. He wanted to see how I moved around. I learned I need to keep working on my feet and hips because that’s what will take you to the next level.

“It wasn’t anything over the top. They were impressed with how I move and how explosive I came out of my breaks. If you can break on the ball faster, you will put yourself in a position to make plays.”

Elko and Gray had worked together at a camp at Wake Forest, which led to an offer from the Demon Deacons.

“He saw me as a sophomore when he offered me at Wake Forest,” stated Gray. “It’s been a massive difference between then and now.”

The Charlotte native also got to spend time with cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght. Gray was informed of the tradition Notre Dame carries but also got a relationship started with Lyght.

“Coach Lyght told me about the prestige of Notre Dame, and it was pretty impressive,” Gray said. “He also talked about running track to help me get faster. He has seen how much faster I got from my season and he watched my workout too. I really like him a lot.”

If Gray does get an offer from the Irish down the line, Notre Dame will be in a good position to land him. Gray was impressed with everything he saw over the weekend as it fits with what he is looking for in a program.

“For me, I like a spread out campus,” said Gray. “I don’t have anything against a tighter campus but I kind of like it spread out. That’s pretty much what Notre Dame’s campus was like for me.

“We got to drive around in a golf cart the whole day, so we got to see everything. The structures and facilities are great. Most Division-I facilities are nice, and Notre Dame’s was at the top of that list.”
