Notre Dame made a change at Recruiting Coordinator before the season started as Brian Polian moved into the role with Mike Elston being promoted to assistant head coach.

Polian hasn’t revamped the recruiting strategies of the Irish, but one noticeable difference is a much larger presence in California.

2018 El Camino (Calif.) cornerback Demarcus Griffin‍ has heard from Polian, and the Irish have the attention of the three-star prospect.

“Coach Polian has reached out, and it’s going pretty good,” Griffin told Irish Sports Daily. “He liked what I’m doing in school and on the field. He loved my leadership on the field, and he’s going to be recruiting me.”

The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder was impressed Polian liked his leadership and not just his traits on the field.

“It makes me feel good because I try to show leadership on and off the field,” said Griffin.

BYU, Colorado, Fresno State, Kansas, Mississippi State, Nevada, Rutgers and Southern Miss have offered Griffin, and he knows he can’t stop working just because he holds offers.

“It makes me excited, but I know everyone is working hard to get offers too,” explained Griffin. “I know I have to work even harder because guys that don’t have offers are coming. It’s motivating for me.”

Two West Coast schools have already made positive impressions, and Mississippi State is slowly starting to communicate more with Griffin.

“I hear from Colorado and Nevada the most,” stated Griffin. “I am starting to hear more from Mississippi State. I took unofficial visits to Fresno State, San Jose State, and Washington State.”

Notre Dame could be in line to host the California native this weekend as USC comes to South Bend, but Griffin won’t know until later in the week if he can make the trip.

“I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I will know by Wednesday,” Griffin said.

If he makes it to South Bend this weekend, Griffin is looking to get the full experience of Notre Dame and to see if his assumptions are right about the Irish staff.

“I’m looking to see how the coaches coach the players and if they are who I think they are as a people,” said Griffin. “I also want to see the environment on campus.”

Two schools have offered Griffin as a receiver and another school wants him to play receiver and defensive back. Griffin would love to stay on the defensive side of the ball, and that’s where his primary focus is on this season.

“Right now, I am working on being patient and working on the little things of playing defensive back,” Griffin explained. “I am making sure I improve my feet, watching the receiver’s hips and getting better at playing the ball.”
