BREAKING: Quinn Carroll Is Irish

Quinn Carroll‍ was happy with his options, but knew he could only pick one.

The 2019 Minnesota offensive lineman has settled on one, announcing his commitment to Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pounder just made the announcement live on KARE-11 TV, choosing the Irish over his other finalists; Penn State, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota.

The Edina, Minn., native took official visits to Penn State, Virginia Tech and, most recently, Notre Dame. Following his official to South Bend a couple weeks ago, Carroll’s father, Jay, told Irish Sports Daily that while the decision would be a tough one, there was a chance he’d seen enough.

Jay Carroll said the family was comfortable with whatever choice he made, but that they would test his logic on why he was making that decision. Apparently, Carroll passed the test when it came to Notre Dame, which isn’t a huge surprise.

Carroll comes from a family of longtime Notre Dame fans and made multiple visits to South Bend even before his recent official. After initially forming a strong bond with Harry Hiestand, Carroll developed a similar bond with new Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.

“Obviously, Quinn was sold on Harry, Harry leaves, so now you have to start over with Coach Quinn,” Mr. Carroll said. “From our viewpoint, it would seem like Coach Quinn and Quinn Carroll would get along well.”

Carroll’s older brother played at Virginia Tech and the family’s experience with the Hokies was great. A connection to Penn State’s offensive line coach led to an official to Happy Valley, which was impressive. But the official to South Bend helped seal the deal.

“It was a real inside look at Notre Dame,” Mr. Carroll explained. “In previous visits, we went to a game and a little preamble and a little follow-up, but not an in-depth look at the school. It’s what an official visit should be.

“They showed us everything and anything. I think it was very insightful for Quinn and for us to see the nuts and bolts of Notre Dame. It was good to see and understand the inner workings of Notre Dame versus just the aura of Notre Dame. I think that was enlightening and intriguing. For the most part, I think Quinn knew a lot of it, but not all of it.”

Additionally, a meeting with Notre Dame assistant Mike Elston likely helped push Carroll over the edge.

“He walked through the facts and all of the attributes of Notre Dame – undisputable facts – relative to statistics,” Carroll’s father explained. “Things like graduation rate, teacher-to-student ratio, endowments, Hall of Famers, All-Americans and then comparing and contrasting that to some of Quinn’s other finalists.

“Again, not opinion, fact. When you saw that, it’s a compelling case. You don’t make a decision solely on that, but it’s a lot of good information that would reinforce why a kid would want to go there.”

Carroll gives the Irish three offensive line commits, joining John Olmstead‍ and Andrew Kristofic‍, and nine verbal commitments overall in the Class of 2019.
