Wide receiver Freddy Canteen announced on Friday that he will transfer from Notre Dame, a move we told Irish Sports Daily readers we expected shortly after cornerback Nick Watkins announced his transfer from the program.

Canteen issued a statement on Twitter:

I will be transferring to another university to obtain a graduate degree that unfortunately, Notre Dame does not offer.

I will also utilize my remaining two years of eligibility to play football.

I want to thank Coach Kelly, his staff and the Notre Dame family for the opportunities they provided.

My primary focus will be to prepare for a career that expands beyond football.

Best,
Freddy Canteen II

Irish.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder arrived in South Bend a year ago as a graduate transfer from Michigan, where he recorded six receptions for 22 yards and one score for the Wolverines.

Canteen struggled with injuries in Ann Arbor and unfortunately didn’t have much luck at Notre Dame as a torn labrum cost him his 2017 season after just three games. Canteen recorded one catch for seven yards for the Irish.

With the departure of Canteen, Notre Dame will move to 86 scholarships as they have to be at 85 by the start of the season.

The Irish receiver room will be fully stocked with Miles Boykin, Chase Claypool Michael Young, Chris Finke, Micah Jones and Javon McKinley on the roster, while Kevin Austin Jr., Lawrence Keys III and Braden Lenzy will arrive in a few short weeks.
