2019 Guard Joe Girard Staying Patient In Final Stages

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Joe Girard‍ still has plenty of time to finalize his college choice, but the 2019 New York guard will be quite busy until that time comes.

Last month, the high-scoring guard narrowed his list to six schools, Notre Dame, Duke, Michigan, Syracuse, Penn State and Boston College.

Coaches from each of the schools have been keeping tabs on Girard during the EYBL summer circuit and were in attendance for a combine featuring Girard’s City Rocks program and Massachusetts’ Expressions Elite here at Western New England University last week.

“It’s awesome,” Girard said of having Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey and Syracuse assistant Gerry McNamara in attendance.

“They’ve shown love and making sure I know they’ve been watching. It’s just an honor to know they’re still interested. The way they’ve stayed in contact with me and stayed up with me will stay in the back of my mind.”

Girard appreciated an additional opportunity to perform in front of college coaches between the Peach Jam and the Hardwood Classic, where he won his second straight 3-point contest.

“This was a crazy event,” he said of the combine at WNEU. “We did it a few years ago with the PSA Cardinals. It was really good exposure. It’s basically the same thing here this time. We played a little bit more and had some fun playing and getting ready for a tournament.

“It’s really a good way to get the younger guys involved and have them see some of the scouts and have the coaches come and watch them along with the teams who have been on us and recruiting us coming out and watching us again.”

He enjoyed the time he spent playing on the circuit.

“I had a really good time this year with the EYBL,” he said. “I couldn’t thank the circuit enough for all of the exposure it’s given me and all of the competitiveness it’s put in me.”

He hasn’t been able to take many college visits in recent months and isn’t sure when and where he’ll go next.

“I was trying to focus on Peach Jam, that’s over now,” he said. “I’ve got a couple more tournaments. I’ll get through those and then football starts, so I’ll have to figure it out when that comes.”

The starting quarterback for the Glens Falls High School football team, Girard has been adamant about not letting his recruiting process interfere with his season on the gridiron.

He’d like to get back to South Bend for another visit, but hasn’t locked in anything to date.

“I’ve seen all of the campus and stuff like that,” he said. “On an official, I’d obviously like to see more of the players there now. It’s not the same team as two years ago. I’d like to see the coaches, see some of the academic buildings, talk to advisors.”

He plans on having the entire process wrapped up within a few months.

“I’m going to sign in the early period in November. I don’t know when I’ll make the verbal, but I’m signing in November.”
