John Olmstead‍ knew what he was signing up for when he committed to Notre Dame back in April and this past weekend, the 2019 New Jersey offensive lineman got another look at it as he visited South Bend for the Irish’s season-opener against Michigan.

“It went awesome,” Olmstead said of the trip. “Obviously, it’s great that they got the win. They started out fast with two touchdowns.

“The gameday atmosphere was nuts. The atmosphere was absolutely nuts. At one point, they put on the jumbotron how back in the day, Notre Dame fans were so loud that the Michigan quarterback couldn’t hear the calls and everyone went nuts. Everyone was on their feet the whole time. It was so loud. The student section was great. Overall, it was just a great experience.”

Olmstead appreciated the opportunity to hang out with his fellow 2019 Irish offensive line commit, Quinn Carroll.

“It was my first time actually meeting Quinn,” Olmstead explained. “It was awesome. Me and him hit it off from the get-go when we started contacting each other through recruiting and stuff. It was just great to meet him finally.

“Obviously, we hit it off just like we thought in person. I got to meet his family. He got to meet my family. He’s definitely going to be one of my good friends when I get out there.”

The pair also had the chance to hang out with several other members of Notre Dame’s 2019 recruiting class.

“We were all chilling,” said Olmstead. “They had a recruiting tent, so all of the commits were hanging out, me, Quinn, Kyle (Hamilton), Hunter (Spears), Jacob (Lacey), Osi (Ekwonu)i. We were all just chilling, playing Xbox and hanging out. It was just great for everyone to be together.”

Like the other recruits in town, Olmstead was grateful to hear from some former Irish greats, but unlike many of the others, Quenton Nelson knew who he was and initiated a conversation with him.

“Obviously, we’re both Jersey boys, so he approached me,” Olmstead explained. “I had a good chat with him for about an hour in the recruiting tent. I got to see him in the locker room afterward. It was good to see him, hang out with him and have him see my family. It was just an overall great experience. It’s obviously really great.

“We have the Jersey connection. We’re going to be playing the same position, offensive guard. It’s just great to have that guy. He gave me some advice. He said it’ll be good for me to get there early in January and kick some ass and hopefully get a spot.”

Olmstead and Carroll were also able to reconnect with Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.

“He’s really excited to get me and Quinn up there in January and to get started,” Olmstead said of his future coach. “We’re both enrolling early, so we’re both really excited to get out there.”
