Notre Dame’s defense had a much different game against Virginia Tech than they had against Stanford. The Irish forced nine three and outs against the Cardinal. The Hokies had nine drives that finished in Notre Dame territory.

In that sense, Clark Lea’s defense wasn’t nearly as good as they were against Stanford. That doesn’t mean they didn’t play well, though.
