It wasn’t pretty or easy, but Notre Dame managed a 16 point win on the road against Toledo.

The Rockets started the game hot and worked the shot clock each possession to only trail by three at the end of the first quarter - 23 to 20.  Mikaela Boyd, who came into the game averaging 9 points per game, led all scorers with 11 points in the opening quarter.

The Irish switched to man-to-man with Jackie Young assigned to Boyd, who only managed four additional points the rest of the game.

Toledo stayed hot from the field in the second quarter (16 - 29) to only trail by six at halftime 43 - 37.  The Rockets hit 5 of 8 three-point shots in the first half. They came into this game averaging just over 4 made threes per game and making under 29% of their attempts.

The Irish also shot well in the first half hitting 17 of 30 (56.7%). 2 for 5 from three and 7 for eight from the line. The lead could have been larger, but Irish guards sailed at least four entry passes high and out of bounds for empty possessions.

ND ran off a quick 6 - 0 run at the start of the third quarter to extend the lead to 11 while limiting Toledo to just 8 third quarter points. ND only managed 15 points in the quarter with a number of empty possessions caused by numerous turnovers and offensive fouls.

The Irish only outscored Toledo 14 to 11 over the game’s final ten minutes for the final 16 point margin.

After shooting better than 50% from the field and 60% from three in the first half, the Rockets only made 7 of 31 field goal attempts (22.6%) and just 1 for 10 from three after the break.

Arike Ogunbowale led all scorers with 22 points. She added  3 assists and 6 rebounds. She was an efficient 9 for 15 from the field including 9 for 13 inside the arc (69.2%).

Jessica Shepard added 16 points and 8 rebounds. She also went 4 for 4 from the line. Jackie Young finished 7 for 12 from the field for 14 points. She grabbed 10 rebounds and had 5 assists.  Marina Mabrey added 11 points and was 3 for 5 beyond the arc.

Boyd led Toledo with 15. Leading scorer Mikayla McIntyre added 10 - 5 points below her team-leading season average.

ND shot 53.6% from the field while limiting Toledo to 37.7% for the game. ND out-rebounded Toledo 39 to 28. The Irish committed 16 turnovers.

Jordan Nixon returned to action after missing five games since suffering a concussion in the DePaul game three weeks ago. She played 12 minutes off the bench. Dani Patterson was held out of today’s game with what is hoped to be nothing more than a sprained knee. She seemed to be moving well without a brace before the game.

The Irish will be off for finals until next Sunday when they return home to face Binghamton.
