Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel originally reported Lance Taylor is expected to be Notre Dame’s next running back coach back on January 27th. Today the school made it official.

"I've been blessed to work at some incredible places in my career, but Notre Dame is truly special," said Taylor. "I'm honored and humbled to represent this incredible University as its running backs coach. I'd like to thank both Brian Kelly and Jack Swarbrick for this opportunity. I'm excited to get on campus, meet our players and get to work."

Taylor comes from the Carolina Panthers where he coached wide receivers from 2017-18. He also had a stint in Carolina in 2013 after being a coaching intern and quality control coach for the New York Jets from 2010-12.

In 2014, Taylor joined the Stanford football program as running backs coach and was then named the 2015 FootballScoop.com Running Backs Coach of the Year as Christian McCaffrey ran for over 2,000 yards and was named a Heisman finalist.

Stanford averaged 223.7 yards per rush in 2015 and ran for at least 100 yards in 11 of 13 games in 2014, including over 200 yards in its final three games.

"I was primarily looking for two things," said Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Brian Kelly. "The candidate had to have the right skill set. He needs to be a great teacher and communicator. He also needs to fit Notre Dame, culturally, and Lance, most certainly, possesses all of those qualities. He recruited at an extremely high level during his time at Stanford, and he worked with the very best in the NFL. His ability to bring both of those experiences together makes him a perfect fit on our staff."

Taylor got his coaching start at Alabama, his alma mater, as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban in 2007-08. He started his Crimson Tide career as a walk-on and then was named special teams captain as a senior.

His recruiting areas at Stanford included Alabama, California (Los Angeles County, San Fernando Valley, South Bay, West Side), Florida (South), North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee.
