Kevin Tucker knows what Chris Tyree‍ can do probably better than anybody, even better than the college coaches who were chasing Tyree as one of their top targets until the 2020 Virginia running back announced his commitment to Notre Dame on Thursday.

Tyree’s junior highlights were enough to make him one of the most sought-after running backs in the entire nation, but at the time, few outside Tucker and his staff at Thomas Dale High School knew the 5-foot-9, 175-pounder was dealing with a turf toe injury much of the season.

“He brings a unique, dynamic running back with that breakaway speed,” Tyree’s head coach said. “His versatility with his ability to catch passes, block, get outside. They can just use him in so many different ways.”

Tucker (pictured above with Tyree, Lance Taylor & Chip Long) expects Tyree to be on the field early in his career with the Irish.

“He can definitely contribute to their offense and contribute at an elite level,” the coach said.

Tucker believes Chip Long’s offense will do plenty to incorporate Tyree.

“They use a lot of fakes and some old-school Power, stretch plays, they can motion him out of the backfield,” Tucker explained. “When we were up there watching spring practice, we saw some of their two-back stuff they were doing.

“They have a nice, old-fashioned approach and the monster linemen they have going downhill and now they have a dynamic guy who can spread the field a little bit.”

Tyree chose the Irish over Oklahoma and Alabama and now he’ll look to help get Notre Dame where the Crimson Tide have been and appear Sooners close to getting.

“He’s excited about Notre Dame not only to get in the College Football Playoff, but actually be able to compete with the Alabamas and the Oklahomas and the speed they have,” said Tucker.

“He’s excited about the coaching staff and the education he’s going to receive at Notre Dame.”

That education definitely played a role in Tyree’s final decision. Tucker encourages all of his players to take an analytical approach when choosing a college, listing a variety of factors that matter to them, and that’s what Tyree did.

“He did his list and put the categories that were important to him,” said Tucker. “At the end of the day, Notre Dame was a few things ahead of Oklahoma. Notre Dame is the place where he’s going to be successful.

“I’m proud of the young man and how he made his decision. He didn’t let outside people interfere.”
