Brock Wright will welcome any opponents who plan to step up their game when facing the 2017 Notre Dame tight end commit this fall.

“I like it,” the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Texan said. “I’m such a competitor. I love to compete. It’s my favorite thing in the world, so that just excites me and motivates me more.”

Wright and his Cy-Fair High School teammates started practice last Monday and despite the Texas heat, training camp may not be as grueling as it could have been.

“They had to change the rules just because it’s so dang hot down here,” Wright said. “The average has probably been about 100. I think it got up to 103 during practice on Tuesday, but we’re pretty used to it, so it’s not that bad.”

Wright is confident in his team after a 9-4 season last year.

“I think we’re going to be pretty good,” he said. “We have a lot of guys coming back on offense. The defense is pretty young, but we’re looking real good. I think we’re going to be strong.”

Wright wants to help his unit make an imprint on each game.

“As an offensive player, we want to try to control the game on offense, slow it down and have long drives,” he said. “I think that will really be beneficial to us this year.”

Individually, he’s hoping to continue improving his game this fall.

“I want to work on my route-running a little bit more this season, be smoother, and a little more on blocking technique,” he said. “I work on them in the summer and also during the season with my coaches. We have a really good tight end coach and offensive line coach.”

Wright visited South Bend a couple times this year, once when he landed his offer and again when he took the Irish up on the offer, but isn’t sure when he’ll get back.

“Hopefully I can make it up for a game this season, but with my brother playing at Rice and all of my games this year, it may be hard,” he said. “Whenever we can or whenever we can find time, we’ll get up there.”

Either way, the Texan will be interested in seeing the Irish’s opener against Texas.

“I’m excited to watch it. I think it’ll be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it.”
