Monday night turned into a free-for-all for the Notre Dame defense with Pete Werner becoming the third 2017 commitment for the Irish on the night.

The Indiana linebacker joins Florida linebacker Drew White and Pennsylvania defensive tackle Kurt Hinish, who announced earlier in the evening.

All three were on campus for the Irish’s Junior Day this weekend as were Pittsburgh linebacker David Adams and Texas quarterback Avery Davis, who also committed over the weekend.

“I went on the visit and it felt like home,” Werner told Irish Sports Daily on Monday evening. “The people there, the coaches, they’re guys I could see myself getting coached and spending the next four years with.

“There’s something about Notre Dame where everybody wants to go, but not everybody gets the chance. I’m very excited to commit there. It feels like the monkey is off my back.”

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder hails from Indianapolis Cathedral and was offered by the Irish in February.

The four-star prospect held 27 offers from Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Werner. “I’m just very excited.

“I’m just going to go in the program and I’ll do anything for the coaches. If they put me at a position, I’m going to bring a positive attitude, leadership and try to make it a great program like it is now.”

Werner’s pledge gives Notre Dame nine total commitments in the Class of 2017 with the five newest pledges joining offensive linemen Dillan Gibbons and Josh Lugg and tight ends Cole Kmet and Brock Wright.
