Notre Dame Forward Carey Booth Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Notre Dame forward Carey Booth has officially entered the Transfer portal per an ISD source.

The 6-foot-10, 203-pounder is fresh off the freshman season, which saw him average 6.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg while making 19 starts in 33 games.

Booth issued a statement on Instagram:

Dear Notre Dame,

I’m beyond thankful for getting to wear the blue and gold this year. I’m especially thankful to Coach Shrewsberry and his staff for believing in me and bringing me to South Bend.

With that being said, I’ve decided to enter the Transfer Portal to keep all my options open - including a return to Notre Dame.

Love three,
Carey Booth

Booth scored in double figures seven times in 2023-24, including a career-high 20 points in the loss to Western Carolina in the second game of the season. One of Booth’s best games came in the 76-54 win over Virginia to open ACC play as he scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

“Sometimes you can’t see it, especially when you’re in the moment every single day,” Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry said of Booth following the Virginia game. “You do see improvements. Things that Carey Booth couldn’t quite figure out in November, now he’s getting there and causing turnovers because he’s in the right spot at the end of the game against Virginia. There’s a process to all of it. Sometimes it takes failure to reach that process.”

The Colorado native never quite found the consistency piece to his game, which isn’t necessarily a knock, given he was just a freshman.

Booth shot 39.1 percent from the field, but just 29.7 percent from three-point range and 63.4 percent from the foul line.

As it relates to his place on the roster, Booth’s rare athletic traits will be hard to replace, but Micah Shrewsberry should be able to find a plug-and-play graduate transfer or even a solid freshman transfer who might be a little more polished. Notre Dame might not find the long-athlete similar to Booth, but the staff should be able to replace the production.

Booth did leave the door open to returning to Notre Dame, but in most cases, that decision is few and far between.

Since the end of the season, three players have entered the portal. Forward Matt Zona will seek a graduate transfer, while former walk-on Alex Wade will do the same and now Booth will join them and over 1,200 other basketball players seeking a new home.
