Instant Reaction: Notre Dame Depth Chart for Temple

Michael Bertsch, Notre Dame's Director of Football Media Relations, tweeted out the first depth chart of the season and I've got some quick thoughts after seeing it.

- The obvious thing that stands out is true freshman Josh Lugg at left guard. It's surprising considering he wasn't working at guard in the early portion of camp and they must have used him there a lot during the practices that weren't open to the media.

That means he passed another true freshman, Aaron Banks, for that spot. Even though Lugg is listed in two deep, I wouldn't expect him to play. Who knows, I could be wrong, but I'm going to assume that Hunter Bivin would be the next man in at left guard if something were to happen to Quenton Nelson.

It may mean Lugg might not redshirt (let's call it what it is), but he's probably the 8th or 9th man on the line and at Notre Dame that guy doesn't typically play very much or at all if everyone stays healthy.

- I don't think the receiver depth chart is worth overreacting to considering they have lined up with several combinations of different players on the field at the same time. Miles Boykin and Chase Claypool might be listed as Equanimeous St. Brown's backups, but they aren't going to be on the bench all season when EQ is on the field.

It is interesting to see Freddy Canteen listed as co-starter with Chris Finke. We didn't see Canteen do a ton in camp, but then again, the percentage of practice we actually got to see was small.

- I wouldn't get too caught up with the depth chart on the defensive line either as I know they'll use different players in sub-packages that have nothing to do with the depth chart.

Still, they made it clear that Trumbetti is the next end in at both spots. So if either Hayes is not available, he would be the starter.

- No OR next to Kurt Hinish or Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa. Both in the two slot at defensive tackle. Both will play a lot this season.

- I'm not at all surprised by Te'Von Coney being listed as OR with Greer Martini. They will both play a ton. One thing to remember about them is that they were both coming off surgery heading into 2016. They were both healthy this off-season. T

hrow that in with them being integrated into the new strength program and I think we'll see a difference from them on the field in 2017.

- Nothing earth shattering in the defensive backfield, but interesting to note that Jordan Genmark Heath is not listed. He was mentioned as someone they intended to play so I wonder if that was just an omission and he'll still play special teams or if they decided they wanted to wait and see if a redshirt is still possible.
