Most of what Miller Merriweather-Lewis‍ knows about Notre Dame comes from a movie, but the 2020 Florida offensive lineman is sure to learn a lot more when he gets to South Bend this weekend for an unofficial visit.

“I’m going to be honest, the only thing I really know about Notre Dame and one of the reasons I wanted to go was ‘Rudy,’” the Ocala, Fla., native said. “It just has a story behind it by itself. I really want to go up and find a place I could go, not only for football, but for education.”

Just a sophomore, Merriweather-Lewis hasn’t really had any direct contact with Notre Dame yet, but did take the Irish up on their invitation to Saturday’s home game against North Carolina State.

“The stadium and the Dome,” Merriweather-Lewis said of what he hopes to see while in South Bend. “I want to see the environment around Notre Dame.”

The talented sophomore already has offers from schools like Florida, Miami, Georgia, Auburn, North Carolina, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and USC among others.

“It means a lot to me, but in my heart, I know it really doesn’t mean anything until my senior year, when I’m signing that piece of paper,” he said.

College coaches have been pretty straightforward with their reasons of interest.

“The fact that I’m a sophomore, I’m 6-4, 310 pounds and have feet like a receiver,” Merriweather-Lewis said.

He’s been to Miami for a basketball game, but this will be his first trip for a college football game this fall. He does expect to hit the road more in the future.

“That’s my plan, to go out and see what else there is out there, outside of Florida,” he said.

Merriweather-Lewis plays for the same Vanguard High School program as 2018 Notre Dame safety target BJ Crim, who took an official visit to South Bend last weekend, but the sophomore said he hasn’t talked with Crim about the trip yet.

It’s a long way away, but Merriweather-Lewis will be looking at factors beyond the football field when picking a school.

“It depends on what they can do for me if I get injured and can’t play football anymore. What happens after football?”
