Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame RB JD Price
CMU had trouble covering the running back last week against New Hampshire. Their linebackers won't match up that better against Notre Dame's backs. Look for Price to continue to flash as a playmaker and make plays in the passing game this week.

Central Michigan QB Bert Emanuel Jr.
A dangerous runner who has produced big plays with his legs, he's not a polished passer and struggles with accuracy. For any chance for CMU to keep this close, Emanuel has to have the game of his life.

Notre Dame DT Howard Cross
Cross has balled out to start this season and he may not play close to a full game if the score gets out of hand, but he'll definitely make his presence felt when he's on the field. He's been relentless off the ball and should continue to show out.

Central Michigan DT Jacques Bristol
He's been outstanding to start the season and was the best CMU player on the field against Michigan State. Bristol is an explosive lateral mover who has been disruptive. He has three TFLs in the first two games and has eight total pressures.

Notre Dame LB Drayk Bowen
With JD Bertrand out, Jack Kiser will take over the starting Mike linebacker spot and we should get to see Bowen's first extensive action at linebacker this season. He already made a splash last week with a forced fumble on a kickoff against NC State and Irish fans will get a glimpse of someone that has impressed since he arrived on campus as an early enrollee.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman:
“It's been that way all year because every Saturday we have one goal and that’s try to continue to play at our full potential. In order to do that, you have to win these moments in the day. I remind them if their mind ever starts to drift or if somebody tries to talk about the future, it's just a great reminder for us to refocus and get back in the moment.”

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Gerad Parker:
“We’ve got a smart football team. Our offense knows our deal and we’ve got a guy that’s playing confidently at the quarterback position.”

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden:
“Yeah, I'm excited about our pass rush. I mean, there was no pass rush against Navy. Again, most of our starters are out by halftime and our play count wasn't very high against Tennessee State. And then last week, it was really gameplan-oriented. So, I thought our guys executed the game plan really, really well.

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman:
“The guys up front are giving me a lot of time. We get in a rhythm; we get in a good situation. Usually, it’s after our defense makes a stop, so we have a lot of momentum going there.”

Notre Dame safety DJ Brown on the spear package:
“For the quarterback, he doesn’t know exactly what we’re doing, where we’re going, our rotations and stuff. It gives the quarterback uncertainty. They don’t really know what we’re doing. Every game we put in new plays and stuff so teams can’t really game plan us. Honestly, confusing the quarterback and then it allows us to make plays.”

Bad half where we pretty much scored at will. Defense was tired
Scored at will? ND scored on 3 of 6 drives. Didn't score jack on their last three, and literally could not get open against a team who gave up 500 yards passing and 42 points against New Hampshire last week.

I just don't get why people can't call it as it is? It was a pathetic, terrible performance on both sides of the ball for ND.

It's not the game, but that half was horrendous. Call it what it is.

Mike

So what you're saying is, JD Bertrand might be good at football?

That is a strange take from what Mike said.

It was supposed to be a joke. Looks like it landed well.

In all seriousness, it seems evident that the defense has missed both Bertrand and Brown on the second and third levels of the defense. Experience matters.

Young guys are getting time today, which everyone clamors for, and now you'll have to live with the mistakes that come with that.

JD is a solid college LB and unfortunately the best we have by far. I hope he's cleared for next week.

How do you think we played in the 1st half?

Did I say that?

You said the overreactions were epic. How did we play in the 1st half?

Poorly.

Let's see how the second half goes. But to start saying we should be embarrassed or we are pathetic seems silly.

You realize saying we are overreacting doesn't mean I think we played well, right?

I do but considering the competition we are playing, it borders on pathetic. Do you agree CMichigan is not a good football team?

They aren't good. I'm not in playing they are. I'm not sure what you're reaching for. Seems like you're trying to "bust" me.

We played poorly. That half was not good enough. We should probably up 35-7.

I think using words like pathetic and embarrassing are over the top.

I do think he's missed, but that isn't the problem.

I'm saying this team is poorly coached, poorly prepared, and lacking leadership today from their team leaders and coaches. Because of that, they played terrible in the first half.

It's as simple as that. Plenty of time to fix it, but I don't understand why people just can't say it as it was.

Horrid half, but there seems to be a lot of bad football today.

#10 Alabama struggling against a bad USF squad.

#4 FSU narrowly escaping against a bad BC team.

#15 Kansas State lost to Missouri.

#1 Georgia's offense is struggling big time against South Carolina.

Why has Hartman started to get happy feet. He used to stay in the pocket and now he abandoning it like Book - and the results aren't great.

Mike, if you haven't noticed, that's what a vast majority of people are saying.

It was a putrid effort both ways.

Beginning to think the HC is not the answer. To many starts like this against garbage teams. I get looking past a team once in awhile but this is a trend now.

I totally get it. There's no excuse for the inability to run the ball on ND's side. I was just trying to lighten up the mood.

I edited my post to add context, but I think the absence of Bertrand and Brown today have both been significant.

The roughing the passer call on Burnham was laughable. The one on Mills was a stupid play but hardly roughing. The picking up of the flag on on the PI against Flores was inexplicable. The PI call on Mickey was ridiculous, receiver just lost his balance & fell down. Giving the 1st D to Estime (which it wasn't), reviewing it & inexplicably confirming it, then reviewing it again... laughable. Initially giving the CMU rec a catch when it hit the ground before he even tried to catch it (with ref standing 5 yds away & looking directly at it). An absolute F'ing clown show...
