Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame OT Blake Fisher
Fisher had a much better week against Central Michigan than he did against NC State, but the competition gets a lot tougher this week against Ohio State and their talent at defensive end. Notre Dame needs him to have a great game, especially when run blocking. Fisher needs to have a great game if he wants to establish himself as a top NFL prospect.

Ohio State QB Kyle McCord
This is the first real test for Ohio State's new starting quarterback. He's had some ups and downs to start the season and there isn't much margin for error against Notre Dame's defense. Expect Al Golden to put pressure on McCord with both the blitz and coverages he hasn't quite seen yet.

Notre Dame WR Chris Tyree
Ohio State's defense is one of the best in the country and driving the football on them to score points isn't a winning formula. Notre Dame needs to mix in some explosive plays and Tyree has provided those for the Irish offense early in the season. The match up with him and Ohio State's nickel will be one to monitor.

Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
The best receiver in the country, Harrison Jr. checks every box as an elite playmaker. He can flip the game in one play and all Notre Dame can do is try to contain him. It's a money game for Benjamin Morrison and Cam Hart with them having to cover all of Ohio State's receivers and no one will test them like Harrison Jr. will.

Notre Dame LB Marist Liufau
Liufau has played well to start the season, but this game will be a little different because they won't use him as a spy on 3rd down. He'll be lined up off the edge often and he'll need to make an impact rushing the passer and as a blitzer. The Irish defense only had a 5.8% Havoc rate against the Buckeyes last season and that won't be good enough to beat them this season. They need Liufau and the rest of the defense to create some havoc.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman:
“The biggest thing is control the noise. Turn it down. Focus on the moment. Focus on today's practice and what we're doing now because this is what will give us the best opportunity to perform at a high level on Saturday.

“It's really been do what we do but do it better, right? That's what I told those guys on Monday when I met with them. Do what we do. What we've done is good enough, but do it better. That's a reminder, stay in the moment, turn down the noise and focus on us.”

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Gerad Parker on Sam Hartman:
“It does everything to our team because, like it or not, there is a big focal point. It’s not the only focal point but there’s star power to that position. There always has been. Always will be. Especially when it’s a guy that has that. So, he has whatever it is. He’s humbled by it and doesn’t do it too much and the guys gravitate towards that because of his energy and his feel and because of how he leads and having that certainly permeates everywhere.”

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden:
“First of all, we're really confident in our guys. We can't have anybody being selfish. You're [not] jumping back door. You know, jumping out of a gap, front side. We can't do that. We’ve got to play collectively. We’ve got to tackle well. They're big, strong backs. The O-line is really big. They have gap schemes. They have pin and pull and they're really great at zone. So, those are all challenges for us on game day.”

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman:
“It’s a classic. Two football greats that growing up, you think about and think of those games, Ohio State and all the other big ones, where you’re like, it would be a cool game to play in. It’s exciting. It is a big game. I think to shy away from that is foolish, but I think it’s going to be like every week, it’s about us executing at the highest level and like Coach Freeman already probably said, reaching our full potential.”

Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt:
“They’re a physical team. We have to focus on us and getting ourselves ready for this game, how we’re going to prepare for that, how we’re going to get a little better this week and get ready for the game.”

Well, OSU certainly has not outclassed Notre Dame. They put their pants on one leg at a time just like us. Let's get down in those trenches in the second half & whip 'em.

My balls still hurt from that kick to the nuts overturned 4th down call.

Should I complain about the D when they have only given up 3 points? Hartman has gotten a little edgy in the pocket.

They got worked a bit in the 2nd quarter. Need to get off the field. All in all 3 points is good though.

Absolutely just ridiculous like the picked up flag, like the change to PI like the missed drop This is garbage Why would we ever not have independent refs?

Obvious to me now after watching 4 weeks of college football our DC cannot scheme up pressure while virtually everyone else can.

They've held osu to 3 points we should have at least 6, not a defensive issue.

Ridiculous comment. How about giving some credit to the best receiver in the country, Marvin Harrison, Jr.? Morrison is awesome and has held his own against him.

Need a new broadcast partner or make NBC pay a gazillion dollars and neutral refs.

Going to be really interesting to see our offensive halftime adjustments. OSU will likely be bringing more pressure to make Hartman uncomfortable . Offense will need some quick releases to negate that and allow Hartman to get the ball out quick. Can't give up on the running game either. I would dial up a screen to Price or Love too…get speed in space with blockers. Hopefully Parker is as smart as I believe he is. I feel good about this second half. It's been body blows and we know we can play with them. Now we just have to finish on opportunities.

A turnover or two from the defense would be nice too!

Notre Dame gets rooked at home by the refs more than any other team. Probably because we always have to use the refs from the opponent's conference.

Hartman cost us on the 4th down and on the 3rd and 5 where they dropped the DTs he could have climbed up in the pocket two steps where there was no rush and made a better read than the throw to a coveted player two yards short. No guarantee we score on that drive but that was not a great play. As soon as they started bringing pressure he got a little jumpy

Our defense could really use an elite pas rusher. They are playing hard though. On offense, need to get Estime going and perhaps hit a deep throw. Need to make any field goal opportunities.

Agree. Not sure how you overturn that call without a shot down the line?

Our FG kicker is a problem. Do we have another kicker that has better accuracy on shorter kicks? Let Schraeder kick the ones that are 50+.

Disappointed in our offense right now. Will ND come out a different team in 2nd half, or is this going to be another big time opportunity lost?

ND had 2 good drives and didn't finish them off. Can't waste the early momentum like that. They need points out of the half. Get the stadium back in it

OSU is one of the most talented offensive teams in the country with the best WR and top 5 RB. No team is going to stop them, just slow them down.

That was an A+ performance by the D. Once again like every big game the offense is an anchor

Agree with this, but we don't have one and without one defensive is playing great.

As soon as I saw Todd Blackledge I knew we'd hate the broadcast. He's a Penn State & Big Ten guy who has little use for Notre Dame.

Matt Cassell should just go ahead and roll up his sleeves to compete the Miami Vice look.

It gets tiring having no offense in big games. Still need better recruiting I guess.

Defense playing great. Got to get a pass rush going.

Offense needs to finish drives!!!! Got to open the downfield pass up!!!

This is different game…. Hartman not going all out on 4 th down and inside OLine being pushed around may not be able to overcome.. Sam had to deliver the blow at the sideline, not ease up and take it

I have felt worse…. But not feeling it…

I worry that this game is going to come down to a field goal. I have no confidence in him: great leg, limited accuracy.

Stuckey can recruit but as of yet I see no evidence he can coach. Greathouse is by far the best WR but he's not a game breaker that will make DC worried

I think the D is playing well. Certainly well enough for us to win the game.

But they need to get off the field on some of these 3rd downs if I'm going to use the word great.

We can't let them run three times as many plays as us in a quarter.

True, but ND is still paying for the failures of Kelly and Del.

I don't disagree but I have yet to see any WR progress substantially under him. I think you could argue Styles regressed
