2026 DE Target McHale Blade Eyes Notre Dame Return
2026 Chicago edge defender McHale Blade isn't sure exactly when, but he does intend to get back to South Bend soon and potentially again for an official later.

Note on 2026 DL Simote Katoanga
2026 J Serra Catholic (Calif.) defensive lineman Simote Katoanga has committed to USC. This is a big one off the board for the Irish. Katoanga, in my opinion, is the best player in California in 2026 and Notre Dame had a great shot at landing him with his former high school teammate Madden Faraimo already on campus in South Bend. In fact, I believe the four-star was a silent commit to Notre Dame and he was setting up visits this spring and then was planning to return in June for an official visit. He's the name USC needed to land in the 2026 class to send a message not only to Notre Dame, but now the message has been received to the B10 when you combine the flip from former Oregon QB commit Jonas Williams earlier this week. It's a bit of a surprise that Katoanga ended it now, but we'll see what happens down the road. That said, USC is doing exactly what I expected them to do with the new faces in the recruiting office. They are prioritizing LA and the state of California to keep the in-state kids home. I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but USC has a serious issue of keeping California kids in-state the last two classes. In 2025, USC signed 4 of the top 56 prospects (3, 14, 19, 56) and in 2024 they signed 5 in the top 31 (11, 16, 26, 27, 31). That's bad. It's a hit to Notre Dame, but the good news is they are also in a strong position with McHale Blade and Elijah Golden, who are like Katoanga and can play 5-tech and 3-tech. Notre Dame is also very much in it for Tiki Hola and Damari Simeon as kids who can play 3-tech. I'd be willing to bet Notre Dame won't be done in this recruitment despite today's events. Notre Dame on the Recruiting Trail | 1.6
Notre Dame might be prepping for Thursday's Orange Bowl, but that doesn't slow down the recruiting machine as Monday is the start of the winter evaluation period. The Irish won't have coaches on the road for obvious reasons, but Notre Dame did get a waiver to send recruiting staffers and some of its personnel staff on the road. General Manager Chad Bowden will be in Las Vegas on Monday and he'll make a stop at Bishop Gorman to check in with 2026 safety Jett Washington. Notre Dame is pushing hard here after a visit in he fall fell through, but Washington has always spoken very highly of the Irish, so we'll see if the staff can get him locked in for a visit. Director of Recruiting Caleb Davis is expected to do some area recruiting and one stop we expect is to Yorktown High School (Ind.) to check on 2027 defensive end Chris Wilson. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder holds an 81-inch wingspan and is someone who could quickly turn into a national prospect once the camp circuit begins. Wilson holds offers from Eastern Kentucky, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and Samford. Assistant to the GM Carter Auman will be in Wisconsin, Senior Offensive Analyst Harris Bivin will be Chicago, High School Relations/Analyst Deland McCullough II will be in Detroit, Assistant Athletics Director/Elite SA & Prospect Issues Scott Connors will be in Toledo while Director of Player Personnel Zaire Turner and On-Campus Recruiting Coordinator Becca Sites will be in Indiana and Illinois. I'm told Sites and Turner were at Andrean High School (Ind.) earlier today and I believe they will also hit up Mount Carmel (Ill.), which is the home of 2026 USC defensive end commit Braeden Jones, who Notre Dame is still recruiting. It's likely some of the Chicago area recruiting will be to Simeon High School, the home of 2025 signee Chris Burgess and 2026 defensive end target McHale Blade. 2027 Harper Wood (Mich.) WR/DB Dakota Guerrant was offered by Notre Dame following camp in the summer and it's likely McCullough drops by on Monday. I'm told Auman made stops to check oin 2027 quarterbacks Jameson Purcell and Trae Taylor in Chicago before heading to Wisconsin to see 2025 kicker signee Erik Schmidt. National Average Rating

The National Average Rating is a proprietary formula that calculates an industry-wide aggregate rating for each recruiting prospect. The formula includes publicly listed grades, scores, ratings and rankings by national recruiting services, along with a Irish Sports Daily rating. Combining the data provides a rating for each prospect, which is then normalized to fit the Irish Sports Daily Rating 100-point scale.

The intent of this rating is to provide Irish Sports Daily readers with a comprehensive snapshot of how individual prospects rank nationally.
