Matt Zona hadn’t heard a ton from Notre Dame prior to Monday, but Mike Brey reached out with some big news today, letting the 2020 New Jersey forward/center know he had an offer from the Irish.

“Coach Brey called me earlier today and let me know,” the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder from Bergen Catholic High School said.

“He said he’d been watching me, loved how I play and that I could fit the Notre Dame system.”

Zona was fired up to add Notre Dame to a list that also includes Penn State, Rutgers, St. Joseph’s, UMass, George Washington and several Ivy League schools.

“I was really excited,” he said of the Notre Dame offer.

Zona is starting to see a surge in attention from major programs, but that isn’t his focus right now.

“It feels good from hard work and stuff like that, but I’m never going to chase a level,” he said. “I’m going to chase a fit.”

He knows a bit about Notre Dame already.

“I know they’re an ACC school, that they’re a powerhouse every year and they have a great system,” he said.

He doesn’t yet know which way his recruitment will go.

“I’m going to take this next week to really try to figure out what I’m going to do with colleges and figure it out from there,” said Zona, referring to future visits.

He does have a great idea of what will constitute the fit he’s looking for.

“I definitely want to go somewhere where it’s great academics and great basketball and I just want to go somewhere that’s like a home away from home.”
