Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly spoke with UND.com’s Jack Nolan following the second day of fall camp.

On the second day:
“It's very competitive. We've got guys that are certainly anxious to show themselves especially the linebacker position. I think we're getting a lot of work there. I think what I like is a lot of competition at the cornerback position and depth there and at running back. So today, a lot of focus on a number of those battles. Then trying to find a balance with the wide receivers. Moving guys in and out. So, a lot of personnel, we did a lot today. Heavy emphasis on the passing game today. I think the tone and tenor today was getting a lot of players in a competitive situation. So a lot of film to watch, but all in all, a really pretty packed day today, in terms of evaluations.”

On not dealing who will be the starting quarterback:
“I think it's just for him seeing all the little intricacies of coverages and different pressures that that maybe he didn't get last year. So really drilling a little bit deeper when it comes to the playbook and what he didn't see maybe last year. We're spending a little bit more time on some of those things with him. We're not giving them easy looks. We're making this camp. One where it should be right, where we're in 400 and 500 level classes for him.”

On Ian Book’s chemistry with the receiver unit:
“You want to build the receiving corps around them that is at that level too because you want to throw the ball without waiting for a receiver to get in and out of his break. I think he's got a little bit of that with Chase Claypool, Maybe he's got a little bit of that with Chris Finke and maybe the tight ends, I think we're building that with some of the others as well.”

On team embracing time at Culver Academy:
“There's a sense about being here that is relaxing, but yet, there's a geography to this place that allows you to get your work done. So both of those things happen while we're here. Our players really enjoy being off campus. They were on campus all summer, so to get out here, get away from campus for a week. They really enjoy it. Culver does an incredible job. Their entire staff is doing everything they can to make this a great experience for so as long as they keep inviting us will keep coming back.”
