Julian Love was a consensus All-American at cornerback. Jerry Tillery was a 1st round draft pick. Te’von Coney was a first team PFF All-American. Drue Tranquill was a two-time team captain and a fourth round pick in the NFL Draft.

Losing that type of talent is the kind of thing that has been crippling for Notre Dame’s defense in the past.

They didn’t exactly shine without Jaylon Smith, Sheldon Day, and Romeo Okwara in 2016. They dropped from 6th in 2012 to 34th in S&P+ in 2013 after losing Manti Te’o, Kapron Lewis-Moore, and Zeke Motta.
