Willie Shaw‍ made the trip down from Chicago to South Bend on Saturday for Notre Dame’s game against Virginia Tech and it was a productive visit.

“Everything was pretty good; smooth sailing,” the 5-foot-11, 185-pound junior said.  “It started off with a tour of the facility, the old indoor facility and then they took us into the new indoor facility. Then, we got to see the locker room and we went out on the field before the game.

“All of the recruits came together at the end right before the game to talk with a few of the coaches and freshman players. Then, we headed out to our seats.”

Shaw was impressed by Notre Dame’s resiliency in the 21-20 win over the Hokies.

“Everyone in stands thought that was amazing,” he explained. “We went into the locker room after the game and the head coach was just talking to the team about character. A lot of the players thought that was real genuine. It was pretty good.”

The Brother Rice High School standout was impressed with all of the facilities on campus.

“I thought they were great; the new indoor football facility especially,” Shaw said. “I also liked the old football facility too; their weight rooms and everything.”

The first-year Irish players gave the visitors a peek at what life in South Bend is like.

“They pretty much gave all of the recruits advice on what to expect, what it’s like to be a student-athlete at Notre Dame and a few tips on how to handle everything and go about the recruiting process,” he said.

Shaw has offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Virginia. He had a chance to speak with a few of the Irish coaches on Saturday.

“They were basically just saying how they were glad to see me and hoping for a good game and just checking up on me,” said Shaw.

“I believe I will most definitely try to get out to another game in the near future.”

He doesn’t have any other visits locked in yet, but does have an idea of what he’s looking for in a college.

“Just a place that when I go there, it just feels like home and that I know I could lean on my coaches and teammates if need be, just a comfortable situation for school and football.”
