Notre Dame special teams coach Brian Polian made sure he got some time with Ian Wagner‍ when the 2021 kicker/punter from Illinois made it to South Bend on Saturday.

“He said that he would love to get me back on campus to kick or he would come watch me kick,” Wagner said of Polian. “He also told me they are looking for a kicker in my class.”

The O’Fallon Township High School specialist was in South Bend for the Florida State game last fall and enjoyed his return.

“The visit was good,” he said. “I got to see the new practice facility that I didn’t get to see last year , so that was great.”

The 6-foot-3, 183-pound junior said he spent a good portion of his time touring the practice facility and Notre Dame Stadium.

“The game day atmosphere was amazing just as I expected it to be,” he added. “I sat a row in front of the student section and felt the rush from them the whole game.”

He was impressed by the Irish’s 52-20 win over Navy.

“ND played a complete game of football against a ranked Navy team,” he said. “It was one of the best college football games I’ve personally been to.”

Wagner has an offer from Iowa and would love to add one from the Irish.

“For now, I plan on keeping in touch and maybe coming back for the kicking camp this summer,” he said.

He plans on heading to Iowa next weekend for the Hawkeyes’ home game against Illinois.
