Before his big Thanksgiving game and the start of his own playoffs, 2021 Connecticut athlete AJ Barber‍ made the trip out to South Bend to see Notre Dame’s regular season finale against Boston College.

“It was very fun,” Barber said of the trip a couple weeks ago. “I liked all of the facilities and the game was really fun.

“It was very organized and very clean and very convenient. I also like how all of the awards and all of the past players were all there too.”

The Greenwich, Conn., native was impressed with the atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium during the Irish’s 40-7 rout of Boston College.

“It was very energetic,” he said. “We were sitting right next to the band. There was noise all of the time. The big screen kept everybody engaged.”

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound receiver/defensive back liked what he saw from Notre Dame’s offensive scheme.

“It actually seemed pretty similar to the one I run at Greenwich High School, so it looked familiar to me,” he said.

Barber, who has an early offer from Bowling Green, also had the chance to speak with coaches on both sides of the ball.

“I talked to Coach (Todd) Lyght, the d-backs coach, and the running backs coach (Lance Taylor),” he said. “They said they were excited to have me there and have a good time.”

Barber’s father is former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber, who knew Lyght from his days as a player.

Barber’s high school squad won its Thanksgiving Day game 38-14 over Staples. Playoffs start on Tuesday against Darien.

Down the road, he could be back in South Bend.

“Hopefully I finish out my season strong and hopefully I’ll be back for camp in the summer.”
