Recruitment Rundown
Mayer took his first recruiting trip to South Bend for the Irish’s Junior Day back in January of 2018 and returned for another visit in June of that year. The second trip really helped him get a good understanding of the coaches and players at Notre Dame along with what it would be like to be a student-athlete there. Less than a month later, he was in the Irish commitment column, choosing Notre Dame over schools like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt among others.

Notre Dame got in on Mayer before many of the top programs realized his talent. But Mayer’s profile received an even greater boost a year later when he dominated The Opening Finals in Dallas.

Covington Catholic Head Coach Eddie Eviston
“He comes from a great family that gets it. They understand it. He’s a good kid. Guys find him fun to be around. Because of not only his size, but also his play, kids respect him as they should.”

ISD Expert Jamie Uyeyama
Mayer is both reliable and spectacular with his ability. That's so rare to find in a tight end and it's why he is an elite one in the 2020 cycle. He might be too talented to keep off the field as a true freshman even though the tight end position is deep for Notre Dame.

He reminds me a lot of Cole Kmet when he was a prospect. Mayer is a big athlete who is better suited to be split out rather than in-line despite having the size to project as more of a traditional tight end. He flashes a blocker with some physicality like he, but he still has a lot of room to grow as a blocker.

Favorite ISD Quote
“Just to even think about fulfilling my dreams...is fantastic, but I’ve still got a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of work to put in before I even think of (being in Cole Kmet’s shoes).”
