Notre Dame picked up a huge commitment from 2021 Bolingbrook (Ill.) safety Justin Walters‍ on Sunday evening as he was fresh off a visit to South Bend on Saturday.

Walters had no plans to commit, but the culture and the environment was simply too much to pass on.

"It was just the energy," Walters stated. "Everybody cares about each other and loves each other. There is no other school where you get the level of academics and football they have there."

The decision now will take pressure and stress off the 6-foot-2, 170-pounders shoulders as he heads into the meat of the offseason.

"I really wanted to go on my official visits, but I knew it was right for me," said Walters. "It frees up a lot of stress and I can just relax."

The Illinois native committed to safeties coach Terry Joseph last night and then spoke to head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday morning.

"I told Coach Joseph last night and I got on the phone with Brian Kelly this morning," Walters said. "They were really excited and happy for me to be part of the family.

"I got a text from Kyle Hamilton and Houston Griffith welcoming me as well."

Walters now joins defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio as Notre Dame's two commitments on defense.

However, recruiting other guys to Notre Dame hasn't been on his mind just yet as he didn't even know he would be making a commitment entering the weekend.

"Honestly, I didn't think I would be committing this early," said Walters. "So, I haven't thought about any of that yet."
