BREAKING | 2021 DE David Abiara Commits To Notre Dame
It didn’t take David Abiara long to set up a visit to South Bend after receiving an offer from Notre Dame, making a visit barely a week after receiving his offer in late January.
It took Abiara just a little longer to decide Notre Dame was the school for him after the visit.
On Friday, less than two months after his first trip to South Bend, the Mansfield Legacy High School standout announced his commitment to the Irish.
“Just the atmosphere, the culture and the coaching staff were conducive to what I want to accomplish, so that was the main reason for me,” Abiara told Irish Sports Daily. “It had everything that I was looking for.
“Academics and playing football at a high level.”
Abiara chose Notre Dame over offers from schools like Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Wisconsin and Northwestern among many others.
Abiara said the Irish coaches were “excited and very happy for me” when he informed them.
He’s also excited.
“It’s a relief,” he said. “It’s been a long process. I thank God for it. I’m just glad it’s over.”
Abiara said it “feels great” to be a part of the 2021 class and is looking forward to joining offensive line commit Blake Fisher in recruiting running back Will Shipley.
Mansfield Legacy High School head coach Chris Melson said the combination of Abiara’s length and athleticism make him such a promising prospect.
Abiara told ISD he hopes to major in Business, but Melson thinks he’d be a good lawyer as well because of his command of so many issues at such a young age.
“He likes to talk about things and discuss topics,” the coach said. “You can sit down and talk to him about any topic that comes up in our culture and he’ll have an opinion with some knowledge behind it. He reads a lot. He’s just a very intelligent kid. He’s a pretty unique guy in that sense.”
Abiara gives Notre Dame seven verbal commitments in the 2021 recruiting class. He joins defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio to give the Irish a pair of defensive line pledges in the group.
Ranked as a high three-star prospect by both ISD expert Jamie Uyeyama and national analysts, there’s a very good chance Abiara finishes his high school career with consensus four-star status.
