Apparently, Mike Brey and the rest of the Notre Dame men’s basketball coaching staff aren’t the only ones hoping to pair 2021 South Bend guard Blake Wesley with current 2021 Irish commit JR Konieczny.

“Everybody in the city would like to see us play together,” says Wesley, who plays at Riley High School while Konieczny plays at nearby St. Joseph’s.

“People I don’t even know say we’d make a good combination. I like JR. We’ve known each other a long time. I think it would be nice to play with him.”

The Notre Dame staff and Konieczny have been pitching Wesley on the duo since Konieczny’s commitment to the Irish last August.

“They’re probably texting me like three times a week, just seeing how I’m doing,” says Wesley.

Assistant Ryan Humphrey is Wesley’s main contact at Notre Dame.

“I like how he talks to me,” Wesley says of Humphrey. “He texts me almost every day, me and my mom. He’s a real person. He’s just real. He’s just a real person.”

Wesley has offers from the other major in-state programs like Indiana, Butler and Purdue along with Iowa, Maryland, DePaul and Cincinnati among others.

He says the idea of staying or leaving home isn’t really a factor in his decision.

“No,” he says. “It doesn’t really matter if I stay close or not.”

The Irish certainly have his attention.

“I like Notre Dame,” he says. “It’s a good school.

“I like the campus. It’s straight. I like the coaching staff. It’s all good.”

Wesley is looking at taking official visits to Ohio State and Texas when he can. He says he doesn’t expect to commit until sometime next year.
